Writing Center FAQs
The Writing Center, located in LRC 169 inside the library, operates during the Tutoring Center hours (M-Th: 9 am – 6 pm & F: 9 am – 3 pm), offering in-person and Zoom appointments, as well as in-person drop-ins on a first-come first-served basis.
The Writing Center can assist with any writing needs students have. This includes any and all writing assignments from their courses as well as scholarship essays, transfer essays, program application essays (e.g. nursing program), and any other writing they may be working on.
Additionally, the Writing Center can help students build digital literacy skills, meaning we can help students understand D2L, Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint), Outlook email, and information literacy.
Since writing is a process, we understand that students may be coming to the Writing Center at different phases in that process. Due to this, we are able to help students at all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming to putting the final touches on a piece.
However, we do ask that students come as prepared as they can, meaning they have a basic understanding of what they are working on and have questions to ask their tutor about the writing. If a student has something written already, that is great, but we are also understanding that students may need help jumpstarting their writing.
The Writing Center has a firm stance on not allowing students to drop off their essays for someone to review. We value the learning experience that occurs between a student and tutor when discussing a piece of writing, and this experience is taken away when a tutor reviews writing passively without the student present.
If students are wanting to drop off their essay for a last check, they can utilize Tutor.com, a 24/7 online tutoring service offered free to students that has this as an option. Students can access Tutor.com through their course page on D2L.
Yes! The Writing Center offers workshops every fall and spring semester on an almost weekly basis covering various topics for students, though anyone on campus is welcome to attend. Some topics include freewriting, summarizing, plagiarism, peer review, grammar, and precision/concision. Click on the Writing Center Events button above to see topics, dates, and descriptions of upcoming workshops.
We are so happy to help students become more confident in their computer skills, also part of what is known as digital literacy. Through a collaboration with Northstar Digital Literacy, students (and employees!) are able to work through different modules that target different areas of digital literacy online from the convenience of anywhere for FREE. The modules cover Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint), basic computer skills like navigating Windows vs. Mac Os, information literacy, and more. Please review the materials listed above to get started!
In addition to tutoring, workshops, and Northstar Digital Literacy already mentioned, the Writing Center also has a self-enroll D2L page with additional resources and activities for students to gain confidence in their writing abilities. To access our D2L page for the first time, go to the D2L Homepage, click on “Self Registration” in the menu bar, and then click on “Writing Center Resources.” We are always updating it, so feel free to check back often!

Northstar Digital Literacy
Northstar Digital Literacy is an easy-to-use program created by Literacy Minnesota to help people cultivate their confidence and skills in all areas of digital literacy. Digital literacy refers to the skills needed to be successful in communicating information across digital platforms, an essential aspect of our current society.
This resource is FREE for all students and employees at NHCC and allows one to develop their skills in operating Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint), navigating different types of computers (Windows vs. Mac OS), understanding the credibility of information online, and much more! The program is set up to be done at your own pace, with modules on different topics taking 60-90 minutes to complete. Some of the modules are also offered in Spanish, and new modules are constantly being added.
Please review the materials below to get an account set up! Also, if there is a preference of walking through the steps with someone, those interested can stop by the Tutoring Center in the library for assistance. For any questions, please feel free to reach out to writingctr@nhcc.edu.
Our Writing Center is a proud member of the Midwest Writing Centers Association and the International Writing Centers Association.
