Tutor Services
Peer Tutoring
Peer Tutors provide academic support in a variety of subjects at no additional cost to the student. They assist students by reviewing course concepts and materials from class, clarifying points of confusion, and developing study strategies. Our goal is to help supplement students’ classroom learning and build skills to become more independent learners.
Math Resource Center
Staffed by experienced professional tutors, the Math Resource Center (MRC) provides drop-in tutoring for any math or math-related course. Our goal is to help students become independent learners.
Writing Center
The Writing Center strives to support students in their writing needs across campus at any stage of the writing process. Our goal is to help students gain the confidence and skills necessary for writing success through collaborative learning and a welcoming environment.

Tutoring Guidelines
Students are allowed a maximum of 3 scheduled hours of tutoring per week. However, there are no restrictions for students doing drop-ins. For example, a student can schedule an hour appointment in the Writing Center, the Math Resource Center, and Peer Tutoring and still drop in for math tutoring within the same week. If a student feels that they need more than this amount, please direct them to the Peer Tutor Coordinator (email: tutoring@nhcc.edu & phone number: (763) 424-0927).
Students are not allowed to book back-to-back appointments, meaning up to 2 hours with 1 tutor without the consent from the tutor. If this is done before the tutor’s consent is received, appointments may be readjusted or rescheduled.
Tutors are not permitted to tutor outside of Tutoring Center operating hours. Tutor.com is available 24/7 for students needing appointments outside Tutoring Center service hours. More information about how to access tutor.com is listed below.
As a learning environment, the Tutoring Center can help students understand NHCC’s Academic Integrity Policy, navigate the challenges of obeying the policy, and complete work that aligns with the policy’s application in specific courses.
- Tutor.com: If you are enrolled at another college or university, you may have access to free tutoring through Tutor.com. Please check with your home institution for more information.
- Local Libraries: Libraries often offer tutoring assistance. If you are a member of Hennepin County Library, they offer online tutoring for K-12 students and adult learners.

- Khan Academy: offers a wide variety of resources including videos, practice exercises, and assessments.
- EdReady.org: EdReady’s goal is to help prepare students for college and career goals. The site offers specific goal areas such common placement exams, algebra readiness, and geometry readiness.
The Tutoring Center upholds NHCC’s commitment toward equity and inclusion in its space and in the work done by its staff. We strive to create a safe, welcoming space for students and community members from all walks of life to be able to access the resources they need with respect and dignity. We recognize the deeply personal nature of some tutoring and aim to create an environment that fosters empathy and is committed to listening, learning, and academic support. Under no circumstances will behavior that discriminates against others, harasses peers or employees, and/or violates this commitment be tolerated, and if such behavior occurs, individuals will be escorted out of the space and potentially banned from the area.
Access 24/7 Tutoring via Tutor.com
At times, we may not always be able to access a tutor in your subject area. If this occurs, you are encouraged to utilize Tutor.com, a free, 24/7 online tutoring service provided by NHCC with tutors who specialize in a wide variety of subject areas. You can access Tutor.com by logging into D2L, selecting the desired course, and scrolling down the right side of the page until you see Tutor.com Online Tutoring. All students are given 15 hours of Tutor.com per semester. For more hours just email the Peer Tutoring Coordinator, Elisha Little at tutoring@nhcc.edu or call 763-424-0948.
