All Veterans and current service members can apply to NHCC for free. Just make sure to show our admissions office your active ID or DD214 when applying. VA Benefits/GI Bill® (Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, & 1606)

Veterans, current service members, and their dependents may be eligible for different types of education benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Speak with a Benefits Counselor from the VA at 1-888-GIBILL1 (1-888-442-4551) or at Ask VA for questions about your benefits eligibility, what benefit to apply for, or benefit amount still remaining.

Montgomery GI Bill® - (MGIB - Chapter 30)

Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard who are on active duty or have been separated from active duty with an honorable discharge.

Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program (Ch. 31)

Veterans with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% or Servicemembers with a memorandum rating of at least 20%. This is not specifically an education benefit, but an approved rehabilitation plan that may include college/university courses which are paid for by the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program.

Federal Tuition Assistance

You may qualify for Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance (TA) for our degree programs if you are currently serving in the Armed Forces (including the National Guard and Reserves).

North Hennepin Community College is approved to process TA according to the DOD Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). TA policies and annual funding limits are specific to your service branch. Please contact your unit or education service officer (ESO) for questions about your TA eligibility and funding amounts.

Minnesota GI Bill

The Minnesota GI Bill program provides assistance to eligible Minnesota Veterans, current service members, National Guard and Reserve members who served after September 11, 2001, and eligible spouses and children. The Program provides a maximum benefit of $15,000. This benefit is separate from the other GI Bill® programs and FTA. For more information, please visit the MDVA Minnesota GI Bill website.

NHCC Military Benefits

Tuition Deferment

Students awaiting benefits under Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, or 1606 will have their tuition automatically deferred while waiting for GI Bill® payments. Tuition will be deferred when a Veteran Benefits Request Form is submitted by the student to the School Certifying Official. Deferring tuition will hold your courses without having to set up a payment plan.

Students are responsible to drop course(s) if they do not plan on attending.
Tuition for the semester must be paid in full by the set payment plan due date for the college. See payment options for the due date.

Credit for Military Training

Your military training may be considered for college credit. After NHCC receives your official transcripts, the transfer specialist will review your military training based upon the American Council of Education standards for Military Programs. The College will provide you a copy of your Degree Audit Report (DARS) indicating what was accepted in transfer. Request and submit military transcripts from:

DoD MOU Statement

In accordance with the Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding:

1. North Hennepin Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

2. Individual academic program accreditations are available on our accreditation page.

3. NHCC is approved for Veterans Affairs benefits.

4. NHCC is approved for Federal student aid programs through the Department of Education.

NHCC prohibits the payment of any commission, bonus, or other incentive payment based directly or indirectly on securing enrollments or federal financial aid (including TA funds) to any persons or entities engaged in any student recruiting, admission activities, or making decisions regarding the award of student financial assistance.

NHCC prohibits high-pressure recruitment tactics such as making multiple unsolicited contacts (3 or more), including contacts by phone, email, or in-person, and engaging in same-day recruitment and registration for the purpose of securing Service member enrollments in non-credit courses/programs.

Students are never automatically enrolled in courses at NHCC. Students will register themselves for any courses. When a restriction prevents a student from registering themselves for a course, a student will only be manually added if they have provided signed, written authorization to be added.

Where on campus can I go for help with my benefits?

Our School Certifying Official is located on the second floor of the Campus Center in room CC 234. Additionally, next door in room CC 233 is our Veterans Resource Center (VRC), a lounge dedicated specifically to our NHCC military-connected students (Veterans, current service members, and their family members). The VRC is equipped with a TV, gaming system, computers with free printing, coffee machine, snacks, and ample space for students to connect, relax, study, have a meal, and more!

Who do I go to for help declaring a major/degree program and scheduling classes each semester?

For assistance with degree-related topics and scheduling, please call our Advising Center at 763-424-0703. State that you are a student planning to use military benefits and that you need to schedule an appointment with our Veterans Academic Advisor. Appointments can be made for in-person, video call, or telephone call settings!

When can I expect my benefits to come through each semester?

This depends on what benefit(s) you are using! Typically, the earlier you turn in the required documents outlined in our Military and Veteran Successful Start Guide, the quicker you will see them posted to your student account or bank account via direct deposit. Please contact our School Certifying Official (info below) for more information regarding your benefit usage and timeline!

How much should I expect to receive each semester?

Each benefit, or combination of benefits, pays out different amounts depending on several factors. Additionally, some benefits are paid directly to the school, whereas others are sent directly to the student via direct deposit.
