The North Hennepin Community College Library serves as an information and resource center for NHCC students, faculty and staff, and also for the citizens of the surrounding communities. By combining the traditional resources and services that have aided library visitors in the past with newer electronic tools, the North Hennepin Community College Library seeks to provide the highest level of service possible.
Collections:
- Books — the library houses a collection of 49,000 volumes.
- Periodicals — the library offers access to more than 8,000 magazines and journals in electronic and paper formats.
- Newspapers — the library subscribes to 18 local and national newspapers.
- Online Databases — the library provides on- and off-campus access to 16 electronic databases, offering access to periodical articles, images, and other information.
- Media Collections — the library maintains an extensive collection of audio-visual items for research and classroom use.
Circulation of Materials:
The North Hennepin student ID also serves as your library card. A student ID card may be obtained from the Public Safety. An ID must be presented when checking out materials or booking study rooms. Community patron library cards are also available at the library's Check Out desk to non-student residents of the college’s district.
Books circulate for a period of 21 days and may be renewed up to three times by contacting the library in person, by telephone, or with an e-mail. If items are not returned by the due date overdue fees go into effect and a block is placed on the student's record until the item is returned and/or the fee is paid. For more information about our circulation policies please call 763-424-0737.
Research Assistance:
The library's staff is available to assist student, staff, and community researchers with their information needs. Questions will be answered at the Reference Desk in person during business hours, via telephone at 763-424-0733, or by email.
Interlibrary Loan:
The library provides interlibrary loan service to its patrons through MINITEX, the state-wide library consortium. It is our policy to provide the delivery of requested books, periodical articles, and other materials in as timely a fashion as possible. We send out requests for items the same day the request is received and notify patrons when the items have arrived. Please contact Cristin Schulz with any questions.
Reserve Materials:
Items placed on reserve by faculty can be obtained at the Check Out Desk. Reserve items are faculty-owned and must be used in the library. A student ID must be presented in order to check out items from the Reserve Shelf.
Library Instruction:
Librarians are available to provide research assistance and to teach library orientation classes. If you would like to set up a library instruction session designed specifically for your class please contact Craig Larson.
Study Rooms:
Rooms for group study (i.e., at least 2 students studying together at all times) are available on a first come, first served basis (they cannot be booked in advance). You may book a room for up to two hours at a time by using your student ID at the Check Out Desk. Rooms are equipped with seating for up to six people and a white board. Some rooms have technological capabilities. Study rooms are only available for currently enrolled NHCC students.
Overdue Policies:
Once an NHCC Library item is OVERDUE a $5.00 late fee will be placed on your account along with the cost of the book. When the items are returned the only amount due is $5.00 late fee per item. This can be paid at the bookstore. The receipt from the bookstore must be returned to the Circulation Desk in the library. Supply the receipt to an NHCC Library Staff Member and the hold will be lifted.
Once an Inter-Library Loan is OVERDUE a $5.00 late fee will be placed on your account along with the $ Market Price of the item. Since the books are owned by a different library the turn over rate to have the fine paid may take up to 3 business days. It may take more than 3 business days if it's over a holiday or during iterim semester. Once the fine total is calculated, it can be paid at the bookstore in the ES building. The receipt from the bookstore must be returned to the Circulation Desk in the library. Supply the receipt to an NHCC Library Staff Member and the hold will be lifted.
*Notice that any holds from the library will prevent students from registering or receiving an official transcript until the fee is paid.
