2024 Fall CARE Week
Join NHCC's CARE team through Friday for CARE Week! Each year, our staff in the CARE Center host CARE Week to engage and connect with the campus community around mental health awareness. On Monday they held their Breakfast Meet-n-Greet, where students could stop by for free treats, meet the team and learn about NHCC services. Additional activities can be found below. Nice work, CARE team!
Leveling Up: Students Host Video Game Playtesting Day!
This semester, students taking NHCC's Video Game Entertainment course have been hard at work designing story-focused Mario Maker levels. On October 8th, they hosted a video game playtesting day! Hosting this event served as a great opportunity for our students to gain experience understanding game design and learning how to make sense of player feedback. Special thanks to Dr. Garcia and everyone who attended, for playing a few levels, and filling out the short feedback form. As we know, our students do amazing work!
The Brooklyn Park Farmers Market Returns to NHCC for Another Season
NHCC was happy to host the Brooklyn Park Farmers Market on-campus for the second year in a row. From July through October, the Brooklyn Park Farmer's Market brought a whopping 6,780 people to NHCC's West Parking Lot on Wednesday afternoons! Something new that we offered this year, was a produce donation option, where visitors could purchase fruits and vegetables at the Farmers Market that were then donated directly to NHCC's Food Cupboard. Thanks to our generous visitors, 300+ pounds of produce were donated this season for NHCC students! Simply put, a farmers market is community supporting community. We couldn't have done it without our local farmers, merchants and the people behind-the-scenes who make it all possible!
NHCC Hosts Theater Production, Faust On-Campus
In September, NHCC partnered with the City of Brooklyn Park to host local theater company, Mixed Precipitation's annual summer Pickup Truck Opera extravaganza, adapting the 1859 opera, Faust. The show was well attended on-campus and fun fact, NHCC's very own, Director of Choirs, Gary Ruschman, also served as the Music Director for the show. Bravo!
Representing NHCC at the Minnesota State Fair
This year at the State Fair, we had staff representation from numerous NHCC departments. Sue Yang showed up from the Admissions department, Jovon Dukes from the Advising department, Marquis Hirsch from the HR department AND our staff, Shelly and Whitley from the TRIO department showed up as well! Thank you to those who represented NHCC at the Fair for spreading awareness of our college with fairgoers!
Student Life Brings the Fun for Week of Welcome
During the first week of classes our Student Life department hosted a series of Welcome Week activities. There was a great turnout for Bingo in the Campus Center and students were excited to win prizes like air fryers, insulated backpacks and air mattresses! Also this fall, Veterans Services Coordinator, Dylan Rowinski held a fitness challenge in partnership with the Minnesota Army National Guard Armory on-campus for students to face off against in push-up and plank competitions! (One of the winning students is pictured below, and she held the plank for five minutes straight!!) Participants were placed in a drawing for a raffle, too. Student Life plans such neat events!
Recap from Pathways Day
In mid-September we held Pathways Day at NHCC! We had a total of 793 students in attendance this year! It was wonderful to connect with students and provide them with the information they need to be their best! The event was complete with helpful sessions throughout the day, a Student Club and Resource Fair, lunch, Vingo (music video bingo) and more!
During a Pathways Day session, NHCC President, Dr. Garcia and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Derrick Lindstrom tested their handwashing skills under a blacklight and got their blood pressure checked by our nursing students! When asked about the experience, Dr. Garcia said,
"Our students were amazing! They had great bedside manner during the blood pressure check!"
Student Senate also hosted Voter Registration/Constitution Day on September 17, to educate students on voting and how to prepare and register for the upcoming election.
NHCC's Fall Art Exhibit Reception Brings New and Familiar Faces Back to Campus
Special thanks to everyone who stopped by our Art & Design Faculty + Alumni Exhibition Opening Reception last month! We enjoyed connecting with former students, faculty, and staff to highlight their excellent work on display in the gallery. Showcasing such beautiful artwork created by our past/present NHCC faculty, staff and alumni makes us proud!
Celebrating Relationships with the NHCC Foundation at our Retiree Luncheon
Our beloved NHCC retirees returned to campus on August 28th, to connect with one another over lunch. It was great to chat with former staff, faculty, administrators and friends of NHCC all in one place!
Thank you to all faculty, staff, students and community members for helping to make these recent events possible!
