June 27, 2022 - Response to Roe v. Wade Decision

Dear NHCC Community,

The Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade is profoundly upsetting for many in our community. This decision to revoke the right for women in the U.S. to make informed, personal health care choices disregards 50 years of legal precedent. This decision is a fundamental challenge to our civil rights and threatens to begin an erosion of many liberties that have been granted to many individuals in our nation.

We must continue to advocate and champion women’s rights and value those who experience discrimination and exclusion in our college community and beyond. The NHCC legacy is rooted in equity, rights for women, and providing access to learning for women in a time when many argued that women did not have the right to an education.

In Solidarity

This moment in our history stands to be a stark reminder of the importance of gender equity issues and how they are disproportionate to the rights of underserved women. In Minnesota, women still have the right to access abortion; however, many states across the country have already signed legislation for woman’s rights to the best reproductive healthcare, a necessary facet of women’s healthcare. In particular, this decision will weigh even more heavily on the most vulnerable members of our communities. Instead of addressing and reversing health disparities, this decision will only magnify them. Please take care of yourself by using the support services provided for both students and employees, if needed. Here are a few ways to do that:

Be mindful that those around you may be dealing with fear, anger, and despair! Please take steps to extend compassion and reach out if you need support, and, as always, let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Executive Team
