October is College Knowledge Month in Minnesota and to celebrate, North Hennepin Community College and the colleges and universities of Minnesota State are waiving their undergraduate application fees Oct. 1 through 31. Minnesota State Month, as we like to call it, is a fantastic opportunity for prospective students and families to explore our vibrant community of students, staff and faculty!

“With a wide array of events, information sessions, and campus tours, there's something for everyone,” said Madi Chuba, Director of Admissions and Testing. “NHCC is thrilled to engage with students throughout the month, and our free application using promo code CKM2024 is the perfect bonus.”

First-year student Toua Hang shared his NHCC experience in hopes it will help future students exploring college. He chose NHCC in part based on alumni referrals. Second, he was attracted to the Computer Science Transfer Pathway program that offers students the opportunity to complete an associate of science degree at NHCC with course credits that directly transfer to designated computer science bachelor's degree programs at Minnesota State universities saving time and money. Third, NHCC was conveniently located for him.

Toua said college is not too far off from his original expectations. “My high school teachers often emphasized how challenging college would be, and while they weren’t entirely wrong, I realized that college is mostly about effective communication, just as I expected.”

When asked about his experience at NHCC so far, Toua said, “The whole experience is hard to put into words because this college has not only been beneficial for my educational endeavors, but it has also opened many new paths for me. From meeting new people and talking to passionate faculty members to even just reading the posters on the walls, the overall experience has been a blast.”

For students considering college, Toua advises them not to choose a college just because your friends are going there. “Instead, look for a college that aligns with your passions and suits you best. It does not matter whether the college is small or large, has your major, or differs in cost or location. Choose the college that best fits your needs and aspirations.”

If you want to be inspired, NHCC faculty have you covered! Students learn from experienced faculty who are experts in their field and practice what they teach. For example, English faculty Kelly Lundquist teaches multiple sections of college writing this fall, and recently authored her first book. She said, “I’m looking forward to participating in the final stages of the publication process, including recording an audiobook, collaborating with designers on the cover, and starting promotional work, while being able to share details of that process with my creative writing students during spring semester.”

There is no better time to plan for college than during Minnesota State Month, whether you are a first-time student or returning. We invite you to apply for free today and start as early as spring semester beginning Jan. 13, 2025. Hope to see you here!
