Dr. Tamara Mans Publishes a Chapter in the Book, Molecular Life Science CURES: Design, Implementation, and Assessment, through ACS Publications

Dr. Tamara Mans, NHCC Biology faculty, recently published a chapter titled "The Community College Perspective" in the e-book, Molecular Life Science CURES: Design, Implementation, and Assessment. She and co-author Dawn Marin write about conducting research with community college students, giving them a chance to engage scholarly work. The practice also enables equitable access in research activities for community college students. Her chapter gives examples on how to implement and assess CUREs (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences), as well as discusses the limitations and benefits of providing CUREs among community college courses and non-traditional students.

Education Faculty Makes it into the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

NHCC Education faculty, Susan Moore has always had a dream of landing a spot on a float in the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (she's worked at Macy's part-time for years). Finally, in the middle of 2024, she received an invitation! Macy's sent her to New York and assigned her the role of clown in the parade. We followed up with her afterward to see how it went, "The clown gig was a fun experience, but the weather was very challenging. There was so much rain and we were unable to hold umbrellas. My rain-soaked clown wig just made things worse. Then I remembered a phrase I found on a magnet in a NY bookstore that read "Learn to dance in the rain".  I put my best foot forward and made the best of it. I focused on giving my attention to all the children standing under their umbrellas; they were smiling and oblivious to the weather.  Their smiles sustained my positive attitude."

Collaborations Across Campus on Video Content Lead to Success

The NHCC Marketing Department has been trying something new this spring, creating videos for student email blasts that  support selected Student Services on-campus. Thanks to a collaboration with Library staff, Tutoring Center staff and Access Services staff, a handful of helpful videos have been put together for the purpose of reaching students via email. So far, their performance has been excellent! Students are opening the videos, watching them, clicking links, making appointments AND best of all, the staff in the LRC have noticed an uptick in student traffic, too! Way to go, team!

Please enjoy viewing two of the examples, below! And thank you again to Cheyenne, Debi, Jessica, and the wonderful student workers in the LRC!

NHCC Dean is Selected to Share her Book with the Community
Congratulations to NHCC Dean of Liberal Arts and Academic Foundations, Dr. Taiyon Coleman who was featured in January for The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library's, Cozy Conversations with Minnesota Authors: Fireside Reading series. Cozy up for four weeks of readings with great writers. In partnership with the Saint Paul Public Library, this series highlights some of Minnesota’s finest writers who have published new work.

On January 8th, Tai shared her memoir, Traveling Without Moving: Essays from a Black Woman Trying to Survive in America with patrons at the Rondo Community Library. In her book, she provides intimate essays from her life, explores what it means to write her story and that of her family—an act at once a responsibility and a privilege—bringing forth the inherent contradictions between American ideals and Black reality. Thanks for telling your story, Tai!
