hands interconnecting

October is LGBTQ+ History Month and October 11th is National Coming Out Day. NHCC’s DEI department is offering many ways to get involved on campus. On October 30th, our very own Christie Kopietz (DEI Specialist in the Gerry Heurth Diversity Center) will be leading an LGBTQ+ History Month Learning Session and she’ll unveil the details of NHCC’s first Safe Zone Training Cohort launching in the spring of 2025, so you won’t want to miss it. Come learn and show your support. Find details to sign up for our November 6th, Community Racial Healing Circle listed below, too. We hope to see you at one of our many DEI opportunities on campus!

  • Oct. 14th Indigenous People’s Day: Smudging Ceremony *All are welcome* 10am-10:45am, NHCC Courtyard
Hosted by Justice Fisher, a descendant of Crow Creek Sioux Tribe. Justice (they/them) shares with us the following: The purpose of this day is to celebrate and honor past, current, and future indigenous folks, their history, land, and culture. Smudging is a cultural ceremony practiced by indigenous nations. The practice of smudging includes burning of various medicinal plants to cleanse ourselves and connect our spirits to the Creator. During the smudging ceremony, the smoke from the burning of medicinal plants rises with our prayers to the Spirit world with our ancestors and the Creator. The smudging ceremony aims to ground and/or center folks who participate – negative energy, feelings, and emotions are lifted in hopes to heal the mind, body, and spirit. The purpose of using Sage is to cleanse and purify, it offers strength, wisdom, and clarity. A flyer and calendar hold is attached. This opportunity is open to all.
  • Oct. 30th, LGBTQ History Month Presentation  2pm-3pm, Campus Center (CC) Multicultural Room (244)
We are invited to learn more about LGBTQ History, and how we can actively participate in creating an LGBTQ+ inclusive campus as the Safe Zone cohort model will also be unveiled. A calendar hold is attached. This opportunity is open to all.
