Many students come to North Hennepin with the intention of transferring to another institution to earn a bachelor’s degree. There are a lot of great reasons to transfer.
Transfer College Fair
Don't miss the Transfer College Fair at NHCC on November 5.
Transfer Resources
- Save money – tuition at NHCC is frequently less expensive than at four-year institutions. Starting at NHCC and transferring credits means you can save money on your Bachelor’s degree
- Small classes – Class sizes at NHCC are often smaller than those you would finder at a larger college/university; you can get more personal attention and time with instructors
- Flexibility – NHCC has classes that can fit your schedule. We offer many classes online, in the evening and even some Saturdays.
- Know what you want to study - Research program/degree and institution, meet with your advisor
- Contact Transfer Admission Rep for the school you want to attend for more information on their transfer in process
- Complete the steps of the transfer school
- Apply to their institution
- Request your college transcripts through National Clearinghouse
- Complete FAFSA

- Transferology – Shows how courses transfer from one college to another
- Transfer Pathways - Transfer Pathways make it easy to complete a specific associate degree at a Minnesota State college and transfer to a Minnesota State university to earn a bachelor's degree.

Transfer FAQs
Students transferring out of NHCC frequently ask the questions below.
Accreditation is a quality assurance process that colleges and universities undergo to confirm that they meet a strict and recognized set of standards. When looking for universities, make sure you seek out institutions that are regionally accredited, like Minnesota State system colleges and universities and the University of Minnesota system. Visit the Council for Higher Education Accreditation for more information on regional accreditation.
Financial aid can’t be transferred from one college to another. However, if you received federal financial aid to attend one institution, then you should be eligible for it at another. You must request that the information from your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) be sent to the school you are interested in attending. Also, be sure to consult with the financial aid office of your prospective school to find out their institutional offerings in the form of grants, scholarships, and work-study.
No, but earning your associate degree before transferring does have its advantages. Students who complete either an AA or AS degree before moving to a 4-year college tend to have a much better chance of completing their bachelor’s degree. For many students, having an associate degree guarantees entry to a four-year bachelor's program as a junior. Last, but not least, earning an associate degree before transfer will save you time and money as your coursework is accepted as a clock instead of a mishmash of courses that may or may not be accepted or apply toward a major.
Unfortunately, you cannot pick and choose what courses transfer. Your entire NHCC transcript will be evaluated at your transfer institution.
You do not need to notify us, but you should be discussing transfer with your academic advisor at NHCC to ensure that you are taking the right courses to transfer out.
If you are transferring to another Minnesota State system school, they will have access to your NHCC transcript. If you are attending a non-Minnesota State system school (U of M, private, out-of-state), you will need to request your transcript to be sent through the National Student Clearing House.
The NHCC Foundation scholarship you received will only count towards your NHCC classes. If you have any outside scholarships.
