North Hennepin Community College is accepting applications from students on supervised release from Corrections into the Paralegal A.S. and Certificate programs, inclusive of legal mentorship, internship opportunities, and assistance with job placement with supporting legal partners. The deadline to apply is November 4, 2022 for a spring semester start on January 9, 2023. This program is a special initiative in partnership with The Legal Revolution, a civil rights and advocacy organization that provides additional services to enrollees. Acceptance into this specialized initiative at NHCC is not guaranteed to all applicants.
NHCC is the first ABA-approved Paralegal Program in the nation to enroll incarcerated students into its Paralegal Certificate program. The pilot, which began in fall 2021, contains a cohort of five students from the Stillwater and Shakopee Correctional Facilities who take 2-3 paralegal courses each semester and are scheduled to graduate in May 2023. NHCC was also one of five local colleges selected for the Second Chance Pell Experiment, which provides federal funding to educate people who are incarcerated, who would normally not have access to federal financial aid funds.
