Scholarship Application

Application Instructions & Tips

  • Be descriptive when responding to the four essay questions. The ideal response to each essay question should be between 150 to 300 words.
  • The Writing Center staff is available to help your with your application.
  • You cannot save the application, so one you begin, be prepared to complete it.  We recommend that you retain a copy of your essay for your records.
  • There is no spell-check in the online scholarship application system. We recommend that you prepare your essays in a word processing program, spell-check your responses, then cut and paste them into the essay boxes.
  • If you submit more than one application, only the most recently submitted application will be used to determine your eligibility for scholarships.
  • All application information is due by the application close date and time.
  • Some scholarships require that you demonstrate financial need as determined by your EFC (Expected Family Contribution). For this purpose you must also complete your annual FAFSA.
  • You will receive an email verifying your application has been successfully submitted. The college uses the email you provide to notify you if you are awarded a scholarship. If you have not received an email, check your spam and the email address you provided on the application.
  • You will receive an additional email if you qualify for any of the scholarships that require additional information. 
  • All additional information must be provided to the Foundation by the application deadline.
  • Complete the online application in its entirety. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Essay Questions


1. Describe your interest in your NHCC major/program and how it relates to your future goals.    

When preparing your personal statement, you may wish to consider:
• Why did you choose your major/program?
• What are your short-range and long-range educational goals?
• What are your employment or career goals and how do they relate to your major/program?
• What accomplishments have you achieved related to your major?




2. Describe any life experiences that have influenced your personal growth.    

When preparing your personal statement, you may wish to consider:
• Who or what in your past has most influenced your educational and career goals and how?
• What difficulties or challenges, if any, have you experienced, and how have you overcome those challenges in order to pursue your academic, career, and personal goals?
• The NHCC Alan LePage Scholarship is awarded to a student who has struggled to overcome alcohol or drug abuse and is ready to make a positive change in his or her life by pusuing higher education. The scholarship may be awarded to a student who has been impacted by addiction of a family member. If this applies to you, check the box below, and use this space to describe the impact alcohol abuse or chemical abuse has had on your life and how the receipt of a scholarship may help you reach your goals.
(Required for this scholarship). You will also need to submit two letters of reference to the Foundation from persons who are involved in, or know about your struggle.






3. Describe your involvement in activities or in service to others.    

When preparing your personal statement, you may wish to consider:
• What responsibilities do you have in your family, work, school, civic organizations, etc. and how do they relate to your educational and career goals?
• What, if any, groups and organizations are you a member of?
• What leadership roles, if any, have you had?
• What awards, honors, or recognition, if any, have you received?
• If you have not been involved in activities as listed above, please describe why.





4. Describe what makes you deserving of a NHCC Foundation Scholarship.    

When preparing your personal statement, you may wish to consider:
• How would receiving a NHCC Foundation scholarship benefit you?
• Once accomplishing your goals, how do you see yourself giving back to society?
• A number of NHCC scholarships are awarded to students undergoing a career change. If this applies to you, check the appropriate box below and use this space to address your current employment situation and your plans for a new career path.

• I understand my application will not be considered if it is incomplete.
• I understand my application will be incomplete if I fail to supply any supplemental information, such as required transcripts and letters of recommendation.
• I understand by submitting my application, I authorize the NHCC Foundation Office and its representatives access to any of my NHCC student information that may prove helpful in determining my eligibility.
• If awarded a scholarship, I authorize NHCC to publicize my name and likeness.
• If awarded a scholarship, I commit to attending the annual Scholarship Awards Banquet.
