NHCC CSci Featured Students

My road to NHCC has been a bit of a winding one. I came to the school after earning my B.A. and being unable to find a job that satisfied me intellectually. I decided to pursue a career in programming and knew that an A.S. from North Hennepin would give me the skills I needed to succeed in the field.

I’m honored to have been able to participate in many of the school’s activities, including our first Hackathon, a web design and development internship and now as a peer tutor. It was through my involvement and hard work that I was awarded the 2014 Business Computer Systems Scholarship to complete my education.

In the horse world, we believe strongly in the idea of the “self-fulfilling prophecy.” If you believe that your horse is untrustworthy, he likely will be. I feel that the same idea applies to learning: if you think you’re going to fail, then you probably will.

As a tutor, my goal isn’t to give students the answers. Instead, I want to help give them the confidence and tools to succeed. Once you get over your fear, you’re in a much better place to learn and adapt to challenges.

After graduation, I hope to work locally in either web or mobile development (hopefully both). Outside of work, I want to use my abilities in community service. Specifically, encouraging diversity within the tech field and using technology to keep our communities safe.

In my free time I enjoy horseback riding, exercising, playing video games and tinkering on my website.
