Student Communication Action Project

Project State Date: September 2009
Project Competion Date: May 2012

Team Lead: Carmen Shields and Karen Kraft
Team: Abel Asfaw, Barb Ross, Cindy Rinta, Debra Fugate, Jane Reinke, Jean Maierhofer, Meghan Forestell, Sheryl Olson, Sue Appelquist, Todd Luebke

Project Goal: The project goal is to communicate with students quickly, accurately, and consistently. This project will develop a process to establish, maintain, and utilize an official centralized resource of college information that is easily accessed and used by the entire campus community.

Project Summary:  Focus groups were conducted among NHCC students to find out what would be the most useful way to present answers to questions through the website. The homepage of the website was redesigned with a new “Ask Us” search bar that allowed students to type their question directly into the tool without having to first click to the page. A redirect was also created to help students get there directly from other places online. Trainings were conducted during college professional development days in January and February of 2011. A statement was added to New Employee Orientation and suggested as an addition to course syllabi. Students learn about the tool  through new student orientation, and from college admissions representatives and counselors/advisors.

Success Factors: This project was just one small step toward improved communication with students – very focused on the online frequently asked questions tool. We kept the scope narrow on purpose, so as not to overwhelm by trying to tackle all communication challenges. We were successful in accomplishing what we set out to accomplish.
