Mandatory Course Prerequisites Action Project

Project State Date: March 2007
Project Competion Date: June 2010

Team Lead: Kirsten Fabozzi
Team: Ann Wynia, Mary Diedrich, Lori Kirkeby, Don Wendel, Mark Larson,

Project Goal: Design and implement a system to enforce course prerequisites and placement levels and expand the current Placement for Success process. Completion of this project will result in more students starting college level courses with the skills they need to be successful. The college has already implemented the Placement for Success process in departments that offer developmental classes. Use of the placement edit for other courses is a logical outgrowth of this initiative. We will create a process and a list of priorities for implementing the course prerequisites edit in other courses.

Project Summary: Project has met its stated objective. All courses have been assessed for determination of pre-requisites. Pre-requisites have been added to necessary courses and required coding has been placed on courses within the student information system to aid in enforce pre-requisites during registration.

Success Factors: Faculty evaluated courses and programs and made decisions regarding need for pre-requisites on courses. A process was developed for identifying reading, writing and math prerequisites by the Dean of Student Success. Impact on courses and enrollments was analyzed and course schedules were adjusted for future terms. Another transfer specialist was hired in Records and Registration. A process map for the addition of new courses and curriculum was developed. Improvement with MnSCU’s student record system (ISRS) and enforcement of placement levels was continued. Student retention was continually tracked. Prerequisites were continuously assessed. The enrollment effect of enforcing course placement   levels/prerequisites based upon test scores at college entrance was analyzed. Course schedules of future terms, as enrollment increased and success in developmental courses necessitated changes in course offerings was adjusted.
